Top 3 Mistakes when arrested for OWI

If you, or someone you know, is charged with operating while intoxicated, you need to know the three biggest mistakes people make. Every one of these mistakes can result in a conviction that could have been avoided.

Mistake # 1: I tested over the limit, I might as well plead guilty

People incorrectly believe that if they tested over the limit that they can’t win so they might as well plead guilty and get it over with. This is the biggest mistake. Depending on the situation, the test might be inadmissible. If it is inadmissible it cannot be used against you. It is like it never happened.

There are many grounds in which a test can become inadmissible in court such an illegal traffic stop or the test was not properly administered. An experienced lawyer can investigate your case, determine if you have an argument that your test cannot be used against you, and attempt to do so by filing a motion to suppress the test with the court.

Mistake # 2: Attorneys are all the same

OWI cases are not easy and all lawyers are not the same. Do you want a great foot surgeon to operate on your brain rather than a brain surgeon? They are both surgeons after all. Rather than hiring the family lawyer that dabbles in criminal law, the cheapest lawyer (always a huge mistake), the lawyer just out of law school with no prior trial experience, or the lawyer so desperate for business that you receive a solicitation in the mail, you want an experienced OWI attorney that has successfully tried OWI cases. Steven Knecht is an experienced OWI attorney who has obtained Not Guilty verdicts at OWI trials including OWI resulting in death. Steven Knecht’s aggressive representation and understanding of OWI law is your right choice to get the best possible result in your case.

Mistake # 3: Waiting to hire a lawyer

If you have been arrested for OWI, you need to hire a lawyer as soon as possible. The sooner a lawyer is on the case, the better your chances of a favorable outcome. Success at trial or a good plea deal happen because an attorney prepared well and thoroughly. If you wait to get an attorney, you are crippling your defense. The best attorney will want to review discovery, independently investigate, determine if grounds exist to suppress evidence or hire an expert to review the test results. If you wait to hire an attorney, none of this will have time to occur. Even a great attorney cannot present a competent defense at trial without knowing anything about your case. Further, an attorney can assist you in obtaining special driving privileges for work while your case is waiting to go to trial.

Do not get stuck on the side of the courtroom with the wrong lawyer. Hire Steven Knecht for your OWI today.
